Bangkok Dangerous: Movie Review

Unbeknownst to many, Bangkok Dangerous is actually a re-make of a 90s film with the same title that propelled the Pang Brothers to glory in Thailand. Now, almost ten years after the original film was released, the Pang Brothers embark to recreate the glory and fame Bangkok Dangerous had a decade before. Were they successful in translating the orginal to a more Western audience? Did it bring their old masterpiece to new heights? Well, let's find out!

The film is all about Joe; he is a hitman and was hired by a ganglord from Thailand to kill four people in one month. Joe hires a pickpocket, Kong, to bring him the target details from the ganglord through a stripper. The story gets complicated as Joe gets close with Kong and Kong falls in love with the stripper. Ultimately, Joe himself learns to breaks the four ultimate rules of an assassin due to his relationships with Kong and a deaf pharmacist named Fon.

The verdict for this one? Well. it was so-so at best. Some people might enjoy the over-the-top action and the somewhat uber-powerful character of Joe but for us, it was not effective. It really felt that the things Nicolas Cage's character was doing were impossible and not very well thought-off. There are films that make the impossible seemingly possible but this one just wreaks with impossibility and fakeness and that's not good when were talking about an assassin for hire here. The film also mixes a love story with Joe and Fon and for us, that was just cheesy. A probable way to describe what we felt when we watched this was it was your typical Filipino action movie. Cheaply made, bad acting, impossible action sequences with a little hint of romance and love in there. Bangkok Dangerous can be a dangerous gamble for your pockets and enjoyment.
