Going the Distance: Movie Review

LDR or a long distance relationship is something that a lot of couples we know go through. Even though most people would think that this would never work, some still strongly believe that love knows no distance and boundaries. We see the LDR plot here in the aptly named, "Going the Distance" starring real life sweethearts Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Let’s see if this would inspire couples who are miles apart to still keep their love alive or will this fall flat and be labeled as just another “Jennifer Aniston” movie - humorless and totally unforgettable. Read on to find out our verdict.

Garrett (Justin Long) has never been in a committed relationship. It has been a long string of breakups because he did not care very much at all. Erin (Drew Barrymore) is a struggling writer. She is already 31 years old and yet an intern in one of New York's newspaper publications. In one fateful night, both of their lives intertwine and since then, they have become inseparable. The problem? Erin is leaving New York for San Francisco in 6 weeks to continue her studies. As the 6 weeks fly by, the two are still madly in love with each other and decide to have a long distance relationship. The question is, "Can the two really go the distance?"

Honestly speaking, we never really expected much from "Going the Distance". Hey, don't blame us if most romance comedies lately have a knack for being just plain bad. It seemed that it was going the same path as the others but boy were we wrong. First off though, the story was realistic and believable but very typical for a romance comedy. In fact, the only complaint we have is it was predictable - there was nothing really memorable about it. We can even say that we too won't remember much from it in a month's time. What makes "Going the Distance" special is how it will make you laugh and we mean laugh really, really hard. The jokes were fresh and it was non-stop and we particularly liked Garrett's roommates. It was not the situational comedy we usually experience more so, it was just all script and one liners and it clicked. The romance part took a back seat and Justin Long may have been totally outshined by Drew Barrymore's charm but are we complaining? Definitely not! It had it tearjerker moments so romantics should not fret. Maybe, future romance comedies should take a cue from this film.

For those in the United Kingdom, you can catch "Going the Distance" in cinemas all over starting August 27, 2010.

Rating: 4 and a half reels

Why you should watch it:
- it was funny as hell and definitely not the laughs we expected from a romance comedy
- the romance takes a back seat from the laughs but it was definitely there on numerous scenes

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- it's the same old story we all have seen so many times already
- this movie was good but not really memorable

  2. I thought that the trailer is going to be a flop but when I was finally able to watch it, the plot is actually interesting as many people believe that long distance relationships don't usually work out. And it's refreshing to watch real lovers Justin Long and Drew Barrymore work in a movie together.
