Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap: Movie Review

By not taking the film too seriously, "Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap" will be a no-frills, full of thrills, laugh out loud film from start to finish. The heist aspect is silly and the overall story ludicrous but the jokes and the undeniable comedic talents behind the film will make you feel it was worth the shot.

In Barangay Husay there is only one profession - to become a professional holdupper. In fact, the barangay has its own gangs made up of trios that have a weekly competition who can steal the most. Eman (Pepe Hererra) and his two friends, Toto (Jerald Napoles) and Carlo (Jelson Bay) are underdogs who hasn't even contributed even one centavo failing at every opportunity to succeed in their attempts. But when they are forced to team up with newcomer Nicoy (Paolo Contis) - the group has an opportunity to not only break the 3-member rule but could actually pull off a heist of epic proportions.
The film revolves around stealing, conning, greed, and murder - and there are simply no good characters in "Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap" - even the simple farmers turn out to be violent people. We wanted to believe there was more behind the inclination to crime and to violence - perhaps it was trying to say something about our society - but we eventually gave up and just gave in to the fun. Because there's really no redemption story here - it was all a joke by the time the credits rolled. But that's okay because the jokes all fell into place and most lines and situations from the script were not only written for just for laughs but seemingly had a purpose in the overall narrative - how silly and nonsensical that narrative may have been. The film was bolstered by the great chemistry and acting from the leads. Pepe Herrera, Jerald Napoles and Jelson Bay perfectly encapsulated the stupidity of their characters with their authentic performances. It was actually reminiscent of the group dynamics from the characters of the film "Anchorman" if you are familiar to that film. Overall, "Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap" will hook you with its outstanding humor. It may not have much meaning but as a mindless comedic romp, it was a total blast.
