Devil: Redemption for M. Night Shyamalan? Maybe!

M. Night Shyamalan has lost his capacity to grab the respect of movie-goers. If not the "twist" endings he forcibly shoves in our minds or his egotistical trips inside his films, M. Night Shyamalan destroyed a franchise recently - not only the Avatar series mind you but 3D technology itself. "The Last Airbender" is probably the worst received film this year. M. Night has become a joke to film audiences - people laughed at the trailer of his new film, "Devil". Watch the trailer after the jump and you be the judge yourself.

"The embattled auteur and 'Last Airbender' director is getting jeers rather than cheers for 'Devil,' the latest sci-fi effort to bear his name. A YouTube video posted by Perez Hilton this week showed audience members laughing out loud at the trailer during a screening of "Inception." The offending moment came when audiences caught a glimpse of the words 'From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan.'"

Honestly speaking, we like the idea of "Devil". Here's hoping that M. Night Shyamalan can redeem himself. "Devil" will be in theaters on September 17, 2010.

  1. Seeing the trailer of this movie you have embeeded, I can say the you have the point.
Really, what can I expect on this movie? I am not pretty sure any satisfaction. But who knows, this will truly redeem his name.

  3. The trailer is quite promising but that doesn't guarantee that the movie will also be as good as it is. We have to wait till Sept 17 to decide on that. Anyways thanks for the post.

  4. The trailer seems to be preety interesting but we cannot give reviews right now I think we will have to wait for the release...

  5. I thought this was only produced by Shyamalan. He didn't direct this and he didn't write the script.

  6. He wrote the script that's it. So tomorrow we shall see what sort of weird twist it will be. Probrably just a random person day dreaming in the elevator. It was all in their head or something stupid. Either way i'm going to check it out. Can't beat the early movie for 6 bucks, especially if it's crap. Why not......

  7. Hm..well I'm going to seethe movie tomorrow(the 17tg) with a friend to see how that turns out. I honestly don't want to see it too much. It seems stupid. But I guess we will
    see tomorrow!

  8. The movie itself is "From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan." It is a part of the Night Chronicles, which are movies that have his IDEAS, but not his direction or writing. The problem I have always had with him is that his direction and writing have gotten to the level of suck. Flat out. But his ideas? I love them. If this boosts him as anything but a man with intense ideas, people are horribly mistaken.

  9. i have never understood the general fascination with Shyamalan. i have never seen any of his films, but have correctly guessed the 'twist' for everyone of his films - as described by me when someone who has seen them tries to tell me how good they are.

even though he did not direct it, once again, guessed the answer to the riddle only from the trailer. i do not mind knowing, sometimes how A reached B is a better story. but that is not happening in any thing connected to Shyamalan.

  10. movie reviewers obsession with him is juvenile as hell. He;s a had tow REALLY good films imo, some ok and then some I thought were awful. Sort of like the track record for directors that no one goes out of their way to bag on every chance they get. That said I saw Devil and really liked it, not like it was AMAZING or anything, but was really entertained. Good tension building and character development for the kind of film it is. Unfortunately stupid ass reviewers are ALREADY knocking it and misinforming people by talking about M. Night Shyamalan's involvement which seems pretty minimal. Too bad, cause as a series it has real potential.

  11. We loved this movie. It made us jump a few times. It was scarier then most movies lately. M. Night makes great movies! Keep them coming!

  12. My husband and I went to see this movie today. It was pretty good, I like his other works better, but it was ok. It has a few scary parts, had a decent story, good acting, little farfetched, but Shyamalan's movies always are. That is the charm of his movies! Go see it! I someone could just tell me who the guy was that fell on the bread truck, I would be thrilled to know!

  13. I thought this movie was awesome! Full of suspense, never a dull moment. Go see it! Its worth the money.

  14. fuckin I started laughing when I saw that it was the kid from super troopers that eats all the shrooms and shit at the beginning that was in the elevator i bet he's the devil lol

  15. I've seen the trailer several times in theaters and I can honestly say I have no idea what this author is talking about. Not once have I heard any laughter during or after the trailer. Mostly I hear whispers of "yes, we need to go see that". My girlfriend is very excited to see it. Me, I'm hopeful that it's not like most of his movies, good concept, mediocre movie. I'm like most of the posters here. You get sucked in by the trailer and you want the movie to succeed. Shyamalan seems to be a master at harboring this anticipation. Perhaps his film-making will improve over time.

  16. This sounds like the rant of a professional fanboy, still whining about Last Airbender. Yeah, it sucked, but riddle me this, Batman: what exactly were you looking for in a movie based on an American-made, self-proclaimed Anime, that aired exclusively on Nickelodeon, aimed at children. Sorry he disappointed you, but get over it. Devil was a good movie, easily one of his best in my opinion.

  17. Loved the movie. Great ending and great message. Maybe people should see it before they start hating on M Night.

  18. M Night is a great director. All you haters can shove it!

  19. Besides who gives a shit what that little fag Perez Hilton thinks?

  20. I thought it was a good movie that all ties together nicely! I thought it was pretty sloppy how the devil(old woman) leaves by saying "damn, I really wanted you!" . Just my opinion! Comedy or or horror film, I was confused at that point. Thanks

  21. thanks for killing the ending for those of us havn't seen it yet A-hole!
though, to be fair i've usually worked out the 'twist' in M Nights films within the first 20 mins.

I saw the movie this afternoon. It was one of his better movies. I do not rate movies high, so I gave this a 5 1/2 out of 10. This one had and ending that I could get my head around.

  23. M' Nights movie are the shit, granted some of them are way out there, but that is what makes him such a good writer. I mean who makes a movie about a bed time story coming true, he does. Every movie he comes out with I can't wait for him to come out with another one.

  24. This movie was excellent! I had already read who the devil was..wish I hadn't, but after seeing the teasers, it was who I thought anyway. But I didn't see the connection coming. I think I was too busy anylizing the people & their actions. The movie was definately worth seeing.

  25. Saw the movie yesterday and it was good. One of the better movies for this year. Maybe as good as 'Inception'? I think he redeemed himself from Airbender. I'm already wondering if it's as good as '6th Sense'. =D You guys go watch and see for yourself.

  27. Mediocre at best. If you're believer in god and therefore
the devil it might appeal to you. Then again I am an athiest so I don't believe in either;)

  28. To Anonymous:

You were really able to "guess" the twist of "The Sixth Sense" without ever having seen the movie?

VERY hard to believe. Millions of people that SAW the movie didn't get it. How are you so good at it?

  29. I watched this film today and i have to say, it was incredibly lame. The only good part of the whole thing was the mattress salesperson died first, he was an awful actor seriously why the hell was he in it. the movie just sucked.

  30. Not worth paying to se at a theater. maybe if there is nothing else to rent when it comes out on DVD....maybe.

  31. You are immensely stupid. I just watched The Devil. If anything it is splendid. What you seem to forget is that a film is basically story telling.Night Shyamalan knows his craft;he knows how to tell a story well.No wonder Steven Spielberg approached him to write Indian Jones. He refused and we saw what a silly spectacle Spielberg made of himself and Harrison Ford.It is no coincidence that Shyamlan has become a victim of Hollywood politics once he hurt the egos of the bigwigs there. He has been inching his way back- standing his ground, making the most of the resources available to him.Yes, with producers not backing him he and the Mel Gibsons and the Bruce Willis' staying away, he has had to make the best of what was available- Lady in the water,The Happening and The Last Airbender being 3 such projects which definitely were very challenging scripts. However Shyamlan has inspired millions the world over with The Devil. The movie starts with the unique upside down version of the city symbolising the opposite of order;chaos and a hitchcockian soundtrack. He keeps you on the edge of your seat with the simple story: what if you were stuck in a left with strangers? From start to finish the movie has the undercurrent of suspense and anticipation.Yes,people laughed at What Lies Beneath and Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson.A good story does not need 300 milion dollar budgets to build interest.Shyamalan has proved once again that he can tell a story with 5 unknown actors and a budget one 20th of the average inane film. You speak of franchises being destroyed by one person- are you serious? I think you should go back to your old day job- leave the film criticism to the ones who know their craft.Night Shyamalan deserves to be an acclaimed director than you deserve to have your immature logic written on these pages. All the best with you new career.
