Zootopia 2 (2025): Movie Review: Worth the Wait

Watch this movie right now:

It’s been a long time since the first Zootopia hit theaters, and so much has changed in the animation landscape and in our lives since then that many of us probably barely remember the original film. That’s why the idea of a sequel felt surprising for us even unnecessary. But to our surprise, Zootopia 2 arrives with a confident mic drop, delivering a well-rounded experience for both adults and kids. It offers a simple, relatable story, lovable characters, and stunning visuals all delivered in a no-frills but effective manner which sets the bar high for animated films in 2025.

Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) find themselves unraveling a twisting mystery when Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan) arrives in Zootopia and turns the city upside down. To crack the case, the duo goes undercover in unexpected corners of the metropolis, testing their partnership like never before.

Sequels that match or surpass their acclaimed predecessors are rare, but Zootopia 2 confidently proves why it deserves to exist with this sequel. If it takes years to produce a follow-up this well-crafted and thoughtful in its execution, we’d gladly wait for quality over rushed releases that lack heart and care.

What makes Zootopia 2 shine is its simplicity. The film wastes no time, giving a super quick refresher on the past film with no fluff, just the essentials. We transition immediately to the sequel in as little time as possible. A reflection of what we get in other aspects of the film. The story for example is straightforward and easy to follow, yet still manages to deliver surprises and emotional punches without becoming predictable. The voice performances and animation work beautifully together, bringing nuanced, memorable characters to life. Judy and Nick’s relationship feels genuinely developed and integrated to the film's overall narrative arc, adding a lot of  weight and investment to the journey. Finally, the film also expands the world of Zootopia in a satisfying way, from its lore to its diverse new species, it was fun to experience a more diverse world on the big screen. As a bonus, this expansion even makes the story feel relevant to real-world issues such as discrimination without being heavy-handed. In the end, Zootopia 2 delivers a package that makes going back to Zootopia worth experiencing again. Heartfelt, visually dazzling, and smartly told, it’s a sequel that justifies the wait and offers something meaningful for both adult and kids.
