TBA Studios has revealed that is it officially beginning production on its much-awaited biographical historical film Quezon this year, with a targeted theatrical release later this year as well.
Quezon marks the latest addition to TBA Studios’ acclaimed “Bayaniverse,” a cinematic series rooted in Philippine history that includes the box-office hits Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. Notably, it will be the company’s first major production since 2020, following its successful distribution of award-winning international films such as Everything, Everywhere All At Once, Past Lives, and Triangle of Sadness in Philippine cinemas.
Filming for Quezon is scheduled to commence in March 2025. The film will focus on the life of Manuel L. Quezon, a lawyer, soldier, and President of the Philippine Commonwealth from 1935 to 1944. It will chronicle Quezon’s eventful presidential campaign against then-President Emilio Aguinaldo and delve into the political and personal challenges that defined his legacy.
According to TBA Studios President and COO Daphne Chiu, Quezon will be released locally and internationally. While it exists within the same cinematic continuity as Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, the film is being crafted as a stand-alone story that new audiences can easily enjoy without prior knowledge of the Bayaniverse. Acclaimed filmmaker Jerrold Tarog, who directed the previous Bayaniverse films, is returning to helm Quezon.
The project is being developed with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). The FDCP announced its funding commitment for the film last year, signaling a collaborative effort to bolster the local film industry and bring world-class Filipino cinema to global audiences.
Casting for the film’s lead and supporting roles is underway, with an official announcement expected soon. Chiu hinted that the cast will feature unexpected names sure to thrill audiences and die-hard fans of the Bayaniverse alike.
TBA Studios has firmly established itself as a powerhouse in Philippine cinema, with Heneral Luna holding the title of the country’s highest-grossing historical film and serving as the Philippines’ official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. With Quezon, the studio aims to further cement its legacy of delivering impactful, historically rich films.
