"KINGDOM HEARTS" Greenlit for First-Ever Animated Series Coming to Disney+ Soon

Disney+ has officially greenlit an original anime series based on the video game franchise Kingdom Hearts (working title). Announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the series is being developed in close partnership with original game creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix. The show will expand the Kingdom Hearts universe with an original narrative while honoring the iconic characters and worlds that have defined the franchise for over two decades.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers worldwide with its singular blend of adventure, heart, and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, President, Disney Kids & Family. “Bringing a world that fans have explored for years into a completely new medium is incredibly exciting. Working alongside Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix ensures this series will remain authentically Kingdom Hearts while offering an fresh, immersive entry point for audiences everywhere.”
The upcoming series joins Disney+’s expanding global animation slate, alongside titles such as Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, and upcoming projects including Messi and the Giants, Warrior Cats, and Journey.
