Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief: Movie Review

Let us be honest from the get go - "Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief" screams Harry Potter all over. The similarities cannot be denied and honestly, it has a lot to prove on its belt just to show that it is not trying to cash in on the Potter craze. What scares us most is not actually the story (which is already based on a best-selling novel) but mostly on the overall quality of the film because as most spin-offs go, luring as much money is the king. Is "Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief" worth your time and money? Can it really bring something new to the table? Read on to find out our verdict.

When Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is attacked by his teacher on a field trip, he soon discovers that he is not a normal kid. In fact, he is a demigod (half human, half god). He is soon sent to Camp Half Blood, a camp for demigods in which they can hone and train their unique gifts. While on the camp, he finds out that he is being accused by Zeus as the one who stole his lightning bolt and if he does not give it back in ten days, the Greek Gods will have to start a war among themselves. If this happens, the world as we know it will end. Percy, with his protector Grover (Brandon Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) who is the daughter of Athena, decides to embark on a journey across America to first, save his mother from the clutches of Hades and second, prove to Zeus that he is not the Lightning Thief and save the world along with it.

"Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief" suffers because of the material it is based on but as a film, it was perfect in our opinion. Dare we even say that we enjoyed this film better than the other "Harry Potter" films? Now what makes this different is that it is really, amazingly fast-paced. The film was literally littered with monsters that Percy and his friends have to fight against with. It was not bad that it was humor bounded as well. The film was both gripping and funny at the same time. The cast was perfect as well especially the supporting cast. Props to Brandon Jackson by the way. Without you, the film would really lack a lot of comedy. So what's our say? Everyone should take a second look at "Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief" because it is not your typical fad-riding movie. It is a separate beast of its own kind.

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- if you hate Harry Potter or really want something new at the table, just avoid this film

  1. Did you even see this movie,it was crap. The movie changed a really easy novel to follow into some BS kid's trying to be cool with modern day crap that I hope kids don't think is cool. This movie sucked and messed up a great book.

  2. How can you say this movie is better then the Harry Potter movie. The CGI in this movie was nothing compared to the Harry Potter movies. The Harry Potters at least follow the book the best they could. The Lightning Thief
Changed the whole story of the book at did not follow any of the key facts of the book. WHY I ask you. WHY do this. It would have been so easy to just follow the book and remove just a little of the book filling areas, But no they used the filling areas in the movie and did not use any of the story. Sorry my English is bad.

  3. Sure the movie was great... if you haven't read the books... it completely changed every single detail (even the best scenes changed) and then changed how Rick Riordan DESCRIBES each character,i just stopped watching it like an hour into it because i wasn't finished with the series and it was ruining all the characters for me... other than that great Visual FX!

  4. Hi All,

We never read the book so we made the review in the context of it being a movie and only a movie. So if the movie's story was tweaked for it to become a better film, then too bad for fans like you guys. Fans of the book should avoid it then!

As for it being better than Harry Potter, we just see it as being open to more people. Harry Potter is just too serious - this mixes everything well. And this is even outside the context of CGI.

  5. The book is great, the movie ... Well, as people said, in Harry Potter they tried to be as close to the book as possible, at least in the first movie. The Persy Jackson books are much smaller than Harry Potter, about half of a a first book, so you'd think it would be easier to fit in. And if they would do, I might give 3-4 stars.
Also I did not like Anabeth(Daddario). She definitely does not look like a girl, who grew up training at camp, more like a next door girl. They should've spent a bit more time training the actress, not to mention I was not imressed with her acting at all. Logan Lerman is OK, and he definitely looks cute, but Percy and Anabether are suppose to be much younger. I guess because the Logan is older they've changed many things to reflect that. In the book there is an innocence of a young boy (kind of first-second year Harry Potter), that is completely lost in the movie.

  6. The movie was good, but it could have been better. They definitely changed a lot in the book, which was a big disappointment to the PJ series fans. But even though they did, in my opinion, the movie turned out well. Even the actors seemed alright to me.Just like Alexandra daddario (Annabeth) whose appearance may have not matched with those in the books but proved worthy of the role as a child of Athena.

Judging 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief' based on the movie itself was a fun and thrilling film to watch.

  7. ABSOLUTELY THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF THE TRUTH. THE BOOKS ROCKED! EVEN FOR AN AVID POTTER FAN. THE MOVIE SUCKED HUGE EGGS, WHICH IS WHY IT FLOPPED. EITHER PUT THE MONEY INTO A FANTASY FILM, OR DON'T MAKE IT. JUUUUUUNNNNNKKKK!
