Splice: Movie Review

"Splice" delves into the dilemma of gene splicing - the act of creating hybrid animals by combining their DNA. Now that just grabbed our attention and not only because the premise has the potential to be a science fiction classic but it also hits into the territories of morality and humanity. Would genetically splicing a single human being a moral thing to do when it could save millions of lives? What we always want in a movie is depth and given the subject matter, it has the potential to make all of us think. Read on to find out if the movie did its homework.

Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are considered to be geneticist rock stars. They are the best in their field when it comes to gene splicing and they are renowned for creating various hybrid animals. The two believe that it is the right time to do gene splicing with human DNA. They believe that by creating a hybrid human, science and medicine will be revolutionized. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical company that funds their research rejects the proposal and tells them that they can get what they need from the current pool of animals they have. This does not stop the two as they still pursue with experiments using human DNA and they do so successfully. The question is, what have they created? Is it human or a monster?

"Splice" is a good film. The suspense and horror was top notch and the acting was on the same level. We just felt that it missed on some areas that could have catapulted it to legendary status. First, we felt that the story just bogged down in the end and we felt it could have ended better. It became your typical horror schlock. What a shame. Second, we think that they did not delve much into the morality of the deed. Yes, there were moments that it makes you think but we could confidently say that it did not make us ponder after going out of the cinema. We also did not like how the issue of having the creature (named Dren) switched from character to character. On one end, Elsa would defend Dren. On the next scene, Elsa would torment Dren while Clive would defend it. Overall though, we still think "Splice" will be worth the horror and suspense it brings - too bad it could have been more than beyond that.
