Final Destination 5: Movie Review

People may judge "Final Destination 5" as a film with the same plot repeated for the fifth time so why watch it in the first place? That is definitely true and we cannot deny that the movie uses the same formula over and yet, we found "Final Destination 5" as the best from a franchise known only for gory deaths more than anything else. "Final Destination 5" ramps up everything - not only the gruesome deaths but also how it tries to have a twist ending that will completely stun anyone. Read on for the full review of "Final Destination 5"

The employees of a paper company are going to a company retreat. Some of the employees on-board the bus are Sam (Nicholas D'Agosto) who dreams to be a chef and an apprenticeship in Paris, his girlfriend Molly (Emma Bell), his friend Peter (Miles Fisher), Peter's girlfriend Candice (Ellen Wroe), his co-workers Isaac (P.J. Byrne), Olivia (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Nathan (Arlen Escarpeta) and their boss Dennis (David Koechner). As the bus stops in the middle of a bridge under repair, Sam envisions the bridge collapsing and killing everyone except Molly. As he wakes up from his nightmare, he realizes that the peculiar clues he saw in his dream was happening for real. He panics and gets to salvage 7 other people from dying but as soon as the funeral for their fallen co-workers end, unexplainable and unlikely deaths soon happen to the 8 survivors. Can Sam and the others find a way to escape Death's hand?

"Final Destination 5" dares to explore new ideas in terms of its story elements and while some of it fails to make an impact (the Coroner the Investigator characters were a failed attempt in our opinion), the final two scenes actually moves the franchise to a whole new direction. This direction is a story with more meat and ultimately, death with a human factor. Death not only comes from Death's hand but it may also come from the characters themselves. Oh, and the twist ending is to die for - without spilling too much, it will literally slap you in the face especially die-hard fans of the franchise. As for the gore, same as the story, this was a complete turn-around from what they did with the fourth film. Whatever the fourth film lacked in creativity, they multiplied it twice back. The death scenes were the most gruesome, squirm-inducing and most suspenseful yet - not knowing how Death will actually kill one character was just plain scary to say the least and the 3D factor adds to the experience and not only a gimmick so that's another plus. In the end, "Final Destination 5" may still have its flaws by trying to stick to the same thing in its first half but the second half shines better by trying to lessen or even remove Death's supernatural factor.

Rating: 4 reels

Why you should watch it:
- the fifth film decides to be darker, grittier and explores new ideas that makes the best Final Destination film yet
- the final two scenes just takes this film to another level
- non-stop hardcore gore will make anyone squirm

Why you shouldn't watch it:
- the first half of Final Destination 5 still uses the same formula as before
- weak hearts should definitely reconsider watching this film

  1. The producers have brought the franchise back to basics with more gruesome deaths and a twist that will have the audience wanting more from the series. However, as fun as the death scenes are, everything else feels tedious and cheesy. Good Review!

  2. I have watched the other series of this film, I believe it all started very well but then it become very repetetive which is something horrible for a horror movie..After the first two films of the series, you have the impression that you already know what is going to happen through the film as it covers the same sort of things again and again.
