G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: Movie Review

The G.I. Joe franchise definitely has a huge fan base worldwide, young and old alike. In fact, it would be a surprise that this movie won’t be a hit especially since it has been talked about for months and months on end and is probably anticipated as one high impact action flick - even rivaling Transformers' popularity and fanbase. Adding to that, director Stephen Sommers comes into the picture, best known for the first two films of "The Mummy" series which are definitely outstanding movies considering the material. Honestly, we do not know much about G.I. Joe as we never really watched the old kid's show (Thanks for not having cable in our area when we were kids). Let us see if our first encounter with the franchise will make a big impact on us.

The film starts off by the unleashing of the biological “nanomites” created by M.A.R.S industries. This weapon is so powerful that it can destroy a whole city. NATO soldiers are tasked to guard the suitcase but unfortunately, they get attacked and lo and behold, the suitcase gets stolen. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) escape with the help of a military group named "G.I. Joe". Both Duke and Ripcord comes onboard the elite military group in order to help retrieve the “nanomites” from the bad guys.

All we can say is, "WOW!". This movie was truly enjoyable and this is what you label as a popcorn flick. "G.I. Joe" showcased a lot of action scenes but just at the right amount of dosage, compared to "Transformers II". Another good thing was the story which we felt was reminiscent to how kids played with their action figures using only their imagination. Hey, it may not contain much sense and depth but sometimes being less serious equates to a lot of fun. The cast was solid and we especially liked Sienna Miller’s performance and felt that she stood out. The Korean actor Lee Byung-hun did good as well and it is good to know that a lot more Asians are getting the limelight treatment. We are hoping Pinoys could follow the Chinese and the Koreans soon enough. The movie will definitely leave you wanting more, good thing there are hints of a sequel. As you watch this, sit back and relax as this is definitely one of the most enjoyable films of the year.
