Global Smurfs Day is on June 25, 2011

Next Saturday, June 25, 2011, will be Global Smurfs Day. This is in celebration of the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs. Columbia Pictures in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation will hold Global Smurfs Day events all over the world in an attempt to break the Guinness World Records Title for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour period. Additionally, it has also been confirmed that the "The Smurfs" will be released in theaters in the Philippines on August 10, 2011. Read more about the worldwide event that dares to paint the whole world blue after the break.

On Global Smurfs Day, participants are encouraged to come to the events in their own Smurf costume in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Records title. To achieve recognition from Guinness World Records, the global events must collectively add up to more than 2,510 Smurfs. Adjudicators from Guinness World Records will be on hand in 12 cities around the world as it is expected that hundreds of participants in each city will come to the event dressed as Smurfs. Costume should be composed of a white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and of course, your whole body painted blue.

Among the cities participating in the world record attempt are
  1. Brussels, Belgium (Peyo’s home country)
  2. Athens, Greece
  3. Scheveningen, Holland
  4. Dublin, Ireland
  5. Mexico City, Mexico
  6. Panama City, Panama
  7. Warsaw, Poland
