Extraction: Movie Review

"Extraction" was a complete surprise. The film had its rough spots but the big-time crazy action sequences, deep and convincing acting, and a solid narrative meant that this was an action film with a huge heart.
Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a fearless black market mercenary who needs money. When his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord, he does not hesitate to accept the dangerous mission. Finding himself in the middle of Bangladesh with weapons dealers, drug traffickers, and even the police after him, an already deadly mission becomes the impossible. Can Take and the boy survive the onslaught?
The first thing that really surprised us is how big-time "Extraction" swaggered with its stupendous amounts of action. It literally had everything in the recent handbook of action films like long-shot sequences and gun kata. If you're looking for action then "Extraction" will not only entertain - it will make any action aficionado grinning widely from cheek to cheek. Of course, as expected, this is also where the film takes a downturn. As the action ramped up, the innocent bodies also started piling up. Now typically, we would shrug this off as nothing but "Extraction" wants audiences to connect with Tyler Take as a mercenary with a heart. It just comes off confusing as on one hand, Rake had us really rooting for him as he tries his best to extract the boy out of Bangladesh but also had us shocked with how efficient and unabashed he was in killing innocent cops who are just following orders. Of note, the cast had phenomenal performances especially Chris Hemsworth who we typically associate with light-hearted characters but was extremely believable and relatable in his serious role. Overall, minus some errors in logic and some confusing character development, this was an entertaining and fun action film.
