Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili: Movie Review

Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili Movie Review: Nakakabaliw

Watch the 1989 version of this movie right now:

With flat and stale acting, uneven pacing, and terrible writing, "Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili" is not worth your time. It has its surprises but the pay off never feels earned as this film was confoundingly straight-forward but confusing at the same time.

An aspiring model named Albina (Ayanna Misola) struggles to cope with her breakup from her long-time boyfriend (Adrian Alandy). Each time she finds success, it seems it comes with a caveat. She gets accepted in a fashion house but her co-workers hate her. She finds a new boyfriend but he has his owns demons. These stresses in Albina's life eventually causes her to slowly lose her mind or is the cause something else?

One of the biggest surprises for us with "Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili" was that it was actually a psychological horror film. The mix of sexual, psychological, and horrific thrills had awesome written all over it. But the end result was simply a brain fart overall. To give credit where it is due, this isn't a dumb porno release like most VivaMax releases. The narrative had some meat in it and the cinematography was excellent. Albeit the non-existent story and character development meant that it was mostly unrealized potential. And this is one of our biggest frustrations with this film. It had all the elements to be watchable maybe even great but the film haphazardly lays down its story elements without a care for context, back story, or even a simple introduction. Another hot topic for us was Ayanna Misola. Unfortunately, this film truly showed the very limits of her acting skills more than any of her previous films. Her take as Albina was flat, awkward, and her expressions simply lacked emotional heft and impact. And she's one of the biggest reason why "Ang Babaeng Nawawala sa Sarili" was a complete failure.
