JUNG_E: Movie Review

JUNG_E Movie Review: Soulless Robots

Watch this movie right now:

With a thumping opening scene, "JUNG_E" felt like it was going to be an entertaining action film. But the film quickly deviates from this notion instead shifting to a drama-based narrative. Did it work? For us, it didn't at all. This was really hard to watch as the film struggled to balance out its world-building, its concepts (on brain replication), and relatable characters and story.

In the 22nd century, Earth has become inhabitable and it has forced humans to go to space and build massive ship colonies. Some of these colonies decide to break away and create their own government. Due to this, a space civil war between the Allied Force and the rebellious Adrian Republic. Kronoid, a company, decides to develop an A.I. that can be used for combat. Dr.Yun Seo-hyun (Kang Soo-yeon) leads a team of scientist to finalize the development of JUNG_E - based on the replicated brain of the legendary Allied Force mercenary Captain Yun Jung-yi (Kim Hyun-joo).

The best we could best describe "JUNG_E" while watching it was it was odd. We get what is was about and what it was gunning for. The film wasn't too complicated and was simple especially for a science fiction film. But it just had too much fluff without putting any effort to build or develop these ideas other than through quick expositions. These were composed of plot elements, critical science fiction concepts, and even major characters such as Kim Sang-Hoon (portrayed by Ryu Kyung-soo). The film felt like a mish-mash of ideas that never really gelled together. The only saving graces for "JUNG_E" in our opinion were its visual effects and production values and the character of JUNG_E (portrayed by Kim Hyun-joo) who was simply badass and brought in a lot of effective acting and drama into the mix. In the end, "JUNG_E" plays around with interesting ideas but didn't have the proper writing and world-building to make these effective or thought-provoking.
