Minions: The Rise of Gru: Movie Review

Minions: The Rise of Gru Movie Review: Same Same, But Different

Watch this movie right now:

If you're a huge fan of Gru and the Minions then "Minions: The Rise of Gru" will be the same old experience that you have grown accustomed to. The creators of this series knows their audience well and they have efficiently made the best possible outcome with the least effort possible. And yes, the era may be different but it's mostly the same old package.

In the 1970s, 12 year old Gru (Steve Carell) tries to join the Vicious 6, the most powerful supervillain group, after their leader and founder Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin) has gone missing. During the interview, the members laugh at Gru since he is still a kid. This does not deter Gru decide to turn the tables against the Vicious 6 and successfully steals a precious and powerful necklace right under the noses of his idols. Suddenly, Gru finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil.

We really think we're getting old and with it the kind of films that we find enjoyable. And we must admit that films like "Minions: The Rise of Gru" is slowly and surely not becoming our cup of tea. We like our comedies a bit on the wild and adventurous side. But "Minions: The Rise of Gru" just felt too familiar and too safe to really make us love it. As expected, the Minions take center stage in this film. And they have never looked as crisp and as colorful than ever before. The cartoonish style popped well especially while watching it on IMAX. We especially loved how 70s San Francisco looked awesome in the film. But all of this glitz just lacked soul. Even with its booming visuals and groovy soundtrack, there's this sense of lack of love and effort with its writing. A shallowness that we just couldn't shake. Luckily, its target audience won't probably notice as they'll be too distracted with Gru and his Minions wreaking havoc on the big screen once again. Just temper your expectations and you'll probably find something to groove on with "Minions: The Rise of Gru".
