Decision to Leave: Movie Review

Decision to Leave: Decision to Love

Watch this movie right now:

"Decision to Leave" will catch your attention with its murder-mystery but will leave you breathless with its romantic twist. This was that rare film that surprised us with its direction, depth, and unique story. You can take it as it is but it offers a lot more as you dig deeper into its nuances.

Hae-Joon (Park Hae-il) is a seasoned detective who investigates the suspicious death of a man on a mountaintop. The man who is an avid climber fell on his own but the circumstances make the authorities believe that he was pushed by someone else. With no clear culprit in sight, he begins to suspect Seo-rae (Tang Wei) who is the man's wife and shows no remorse. As the investigation develops, Hae-Joon finds himself enthralled by Seo-rae. How could he find the truth when he is slowly falling in love with his main suspect?

Fascinating. This is the best word we can describe "Decision to Leave". It literally was a one-of-a-kind of experience. It was a perfect storm of creative writing, outstanding technical execution, and memorable acting and chemistry from its leads. For us, the intricacies of the story and character dynamics stood out most. The plot was simple - detective investigating a death and the primary suspect is his wife - but the way the narrative develops into a meticulous maze of complications, nuances, and realizations was something we didn't anticipate at all. Tang Wei's performance in particular was the icing on the cake - she stole the show as the quietly seductive Seo-rae. Although for those who expects a purely procedural mystery crime experience, "Decision to Leave" might disappoint as the mystery wasn't its main point. It starts it off with a bang but this is a film that focuses on its living and breathing characters instead.

Rating: 4 and a half reels
